What is couch flipping? A little bit of how we got started...

For those of you who are brand new, and have never heard of "couch-flipping", it is essentially the process of getting a couch at a discounted price and "flipping" it for a higher price to make a profit. This can be done with anything. I just consider it having a skillset that is necessary in business - being able to buy a product at a certain price and determine its value to then turn and make a profit over and over again. 

We (Tanner and Mariah) have been flipping things for forever (well at least it feels that way). It started with cars, lawnmowers, etc. Then branched to books and CD's on Amazon's marketplace. We then stumbled into furniture flipping. After finding furniture flipping to be profitable, we kept going and saw the tremendous potential of the used (but good/refurbished/clean) furniture market. 

How we got into "couch-flipping" was back in 2020, we had just moved to Arizona from North Dakota and had flipped some furniture like dressers and nightstands. So we were already in the mindspace of someone who was on the lookout for a good deal to make some money. One day, we were taking out the trash at our apartment complex and noticed there was a sectional by our trash bins that someone had just put there. I'm assuming they were moving as it happened at the end of every month the more we started to pay attention and remember.

We decided, huh, let's try to flip this couch. We were sure we could flip this nice sectional for even a few hundred bucks cleaned up as it was in great condition. So, we carried this baby up 3 flights of stairs into our tiny apartment, cleaned it up, and sold it within a day or two for $300 (and they even picked it up). From there we were hooked. Although we did not start getting into full-time couch flipping as a business for about another year - que eye roll (we didn't have the business mind yet that saw the infinite opportunities at our fingertips). 

However, after hitting dead ends and burn out with every business we tried thus far, we stumbled back on the concept of flipping couches and furniture. We remember how fast things moved and how much we enjoyed it. We started going to thrift stores and building relationships with the managers. From there we would build it up to a monster of $20,000 months. Before reaching that milestone we had a lot of trial and error, but we learned quickly (we had to, we were broke as jokes). We flipped everything from tables, to dressers, to desks -you name it, we flipped it. However, we quickly found the thing to sell the quickest, that was easy and not as bulky and heavy as wooden pieces to be couches/sectionals. 

That's really where it all started... From there it was a whole year to year-and-a-half of learning by mistakes and shifting time and time again. 

Here we are now...

- Hitting $15k+ net months consistently while also having time to homeschool our son, relax, take time off when we want, and focus on growing other businesses. 

- Having clear systems and processes that are repeatable

- Building long-term relationships because of couch flipping

- Growing our business skill sets (as well as a backbone which is needed in any business endeavour)

- The ability to build confidence and post online which brought us the relationship that's allowing us to scale, hire employees, get a commercial space, restructure our business, and focus more and more on growth! Wow!

Who does couch-flipping work for?

Couch flipping (or furniture flipping) in general can work for anyone. However, every person has a different plan, goals, journey, resources, geographical location, etc. 

With those considerations I gave, let's look at your options:

You can flip used and new couches, flip other types of furniture in addition to couches, build custom furniture, etc. Any of these are good options whether you're in a big or small area. You can add these methods into couch flipping if you're in a smaller market and want to make more money, differentiate from others in your market, etc. 

Anything can work for anyone if they have the discipline and willingness to work for it and grow.
